"Take the Floor with Dinjoe"
"Take the Floor with Dinjoe".
This painting shows a family having Sunday dinner listening to DinJoe hosting "Take the floor" on Radio Éireann. It was a mixture of Irish music, dance and craic. He used to tell Jokes which we knew were funny by the grown-ups reaction but never got them.
As my dad was a builder we had a loudspeaker from the radio to our dining room so we listened to other favourites like "Kennedys of Castleross" during the week along with "Waltons last word is if you feel like singing, do sing an Irish song". "School around the corner". I also remember days being off school when I was ill and my mother listening to "Mrs. Dale's diary" doing her housework.
"Hospitals Request" was another weekly show which used to play Chinese music if you asked them to pick a song for you.
